Energy exchange and bilateral contracts in Iran Electricity Market

According to Iran's seventh development national plan, the share of energy exchange and bilateral agreements in Iran's Electricity Market should reach 60%.

The table below shows the share of wholesale market trades in Iran's Energy Exchange and private bilateral contracts (billion KWH) during 2020–2024.

Since 2022, with the obligation of, industrial consumers above 5 megawatts to purchase electricity through the energy exchange or bilaterally, the share of energy exchange and bilateral contracts has increased.

Since 2023, industrial consumers above one megawatt have been required to buy electricity through the exchange or bilaterally.

From the beginning of 2024, with the participation of electricity distribution companies to purchase their electricity through the energy exchange, expected with the continuous financing of electricity distribution companies, the share of off-market transactions will increase to more than 50%.
