Global Renewable Energy Growth Reached Record Levels in 2024 – But More Is Needed

A new report from the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) reveals that 92.5% of all new electricity added in 2024 came from clean energy sources, totaling a record 585 GW, up 15% from 2023. Yet, the world remains 28% short of the goal to triple renewable energy capacity by 2030.
China led the surge, accounting for nearly 64% of global additions—adding around 374 GW, mostly from solar. That’s over 8 times more than what the U.S. added, and 5 times Europe’s additions. China’s solar capacity now stands at 887 GW, compared to 176 GW in the U.S.
Despite the growth, global leaders stress the need for faster and fairer action. UN Secretary-General António Guterres stated: “The shift to clean energy must be faster and fairer.” The transition is cutting emissions, lowering bills, and creating jobs, but bolder climate policies and global cooperation are essential to stay on track.
